A publication in the Village News, Hermanus featured part of the previous post on the “State of Climate Change, October 2021”.
This was written by Michael Austin of Greenheart Projects. The house was designed and built by Mike & Renee as an eco friendly house. A link on this site is available for the house and garden, titled “An eco-house Project”. The house has solar hot water, solar energy input and minimal life style changes.
The house is integrated with a natural Fynbos garden and a vegetable garden and fruit orchard which have been productive since the second year. All grey water is recycled and together with rain water harvesting supplies most of the water requirements even in this relatively dry water area. All recyclable materials are composted, including alien Port Jackson and invasive pines. This has created a rich biodiversity in the soil providing most of the nutrients on what started as extremely poor very sandy soils covered mainly by Port Jacksons at the start, five years ago.
